My day as a guest writer for Crikey! Magazine

Wow! What an awesome day!
I have just completed an absolutely fabulous day with the crew of Australia Zoo’s  official magazine, Crikey!

My Nanny bought me my first Crikey! magazine quite a few years ago and I have been reading it every since and always look forward to the day it arrives in my letter box – I usually do nothing else once it arrives! But I never thought I would get to be involved in the magazine.

This was the coolest prize for raising the most money in the Joey Ambassadors Read-athon – all the money went to the Wildlife Hospital and that was prize enough. But when I found out that I got to help the Crikey! magazine and even go on a wildlife rescue with Australia Zoo’s Rescue Unit, I was absolutely thrilled.

I got to work with a wonderful lady, Louise, who is the editor of Crikey! and tour the hospital with Louise and Ben, the cool photographer from Australia Zoo. Murray gave us a great tour and I saw some beautiful Sea Turtles – absolutely huge! I helped with a Kookaburra getting X-Rays.

The rescue was also great, but with a sad ending. The Australia Zoo Rescue Unit was calle out by a member of the public to help a flying fox, which was found on a fence. Fortunately not entangled on barbed wire like so many. However it turned out he had been electrocuted and had to be put down. I was sad for little Jack, but glad that he didn’t have to endure any more pain and suffering. Dad told me later that Euthanasia translates a “good death”, which I guess it was – little Jack has gone to a better place now. Rest In Peace little buddy.

Thanks again to all the wonderful people at Crikey!, Australia Zoo and Wildlife Warriors. You all care so much for animals… no wonder I feel so at home.
